Those who work on the web may have heard the terms crawling and indexing, but might not know what it means in terms of SEO.
Crawling
"Crawling" is how Google's autobot's find and look through your website. It does this for tracking purposes, to later categorise and index your website. The bots find your page and follow your links, having an in-depth look around your site.
Indexing
After crawling, Google puts them onto it's index, i.e. web search. This is how it categorises and lists web pages into Google search.
How to Make Crawling More Effective
The more effective Google is at crawling through your website, the higher a chance you'll be listed higher in Google search. Therefore it's important to make it as easy as possible for them. You can do this by:
- Domain name. Ensure your domain name contains the most important word, or 'keyword', tend to rank better.
- Backlinks. The more backlinks you have to your site, the more trustworthy and notable your site must be in the eyes of Google. For more information about backlinks, visit our article "Backlinks - What Are They, and How Can They Improve SEO?"
- Internal linking. Internal linking will help direct active users to other parts of your site, increasing SEO and maintaining active users on your site.
- Avoid duplication. Duplicating your own content will count against you hugely - Google may even ban your website because of it.
- Create SEO friendly URLS. Very important for great SEO.
